The brain acts as the control engine of the body. It administers almost everything that humans do, from waking up to sleeping. It is composed of five key players that enable people to perform their daily tasks. For instance, it allows you to stay focused while attending an IELTS review.

  • Cerebrum – It comprises 85% of the brain. It focuses on higher brain functions, such as thought and action. 
  • Cerebellum ‒ It is commonly known as the "little brain." This part is responsible for regulation and coordination of movement, posture and balance. 
  • Brain stem ‒ It is in charge of all functions that keep humans alive, such as breathing, digesting and circulating blood. 
  • Pituitary gland ‒ It controls your body’s growth. It is responsible for producing and releasing hormones to your body, which is most visible during puberty. This stage is when changes in the human body experience changes such as growth of hair in armpits, genitals and face.
  •  Hypothalamus ‒ It is in charge of regulating body temperature. For instance, it sends signals to the body to produce sweat or for certain muscles to contract or shiver in response to a specific temperature.

  1. Your brain knows when you tickle yourself. It distinguishes unexpected external touch from your touch.
  2. The brain is made up of about 75% of water, same as with the heart. Two percent of dehydration can affect attention, memory and cognitive skills. This is the reason why water is essential for growth and survival.
  3. It is the body's fattiest organ. It is composed of 60% fats.
  4. Cholesterol fuels brain development. Without an adequate supply of good cholesterol (i.e., from fish and certain fruits), brain cells die. 
  5. The brain utilizes 25% of the total oxygen in the body. Breathing exercises provide a constant supply of oxygen to the brain, which allows it to perform better.
  6. Stress can make your brain smaller. In fact, studies show that the average size of the human brain has now shrunk to the size of a tennis ball. 
  7. The brain cannot multitask. It is impossible for the human brain to focus on two tasks at the same time. What happens is you are switching from one task to another. This is what they call "context-switching."
  8. Studies show that your brain’s storage capacity is unlimited. Unlike computer memory, it does not get all used up. However, it distinguishes from storing long-term and short-term memories.
  9. It never stops working. At night, brain tissues work to repair and restore damaged cells. This is why people are advised to have at least eight hours of sleep every day. 
  10. The brain cannot feel pain. Though pain is processed in it, it has no pain receptors. This is the reason why brain surgeries can be performed without causing any discomfort even when the patient is awake.
The brain plays a vital role in human’s daily tasks. When it malfunctions, all human activities are affected. Thus, it is important to take care of your brain. Get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, exercise and, above all, drink lots of water.
